What constitutes a dental emergency? Broadly speaking, it’s anything that causes pain for your teeth and gums. This could be a toothache that starts off as a dull pain and gets worse over time, or you could wake up with a severe pain in your tooth. Either way, if you have a sharp pain or a dull ache that’s troubling you, get in touch.
There are several causes of toothache, including: dental abscesses, root canal infections, tooth decay, gum disease and sinus congestion. Our emergency dentist in Edinburgh can diagnose and treat your condition on the day. And while it may not always be able to be resolved in one visit, we will do all we can to make sure you leave the surgery pain-free.
The other category of dental emergency is cracked or knocked-out teeth. This can happen so easily, from a trip or fall over a cracked paving stone, to an accidental elbow in the face while playing sport.
The good news is that if you get to our emergency dentist in Edinburgh within 2 hours, there’s a good chance that we can reattach your tooth.
There are a few things you can do to give your tooth the best chance of reattachment:
- pick it up by the crown and never touch the root – it is living tissue that is affected by the dirt and oil on our hands
- clean the root either with saliva or milk – the chemicals in tap water can damage the root
- if you can, put it back into the socket and bite down, or keep it inside your cheek
- if this isn’t possible, put it in a clean container and cover it with milk.
